Why You’ll Love This Recipe
Once again, I’d like to thank Trader Joe’s for some inspiration for this recipe, their chocolate hummus tastes amazing and it inspired me to develop a recipe at home!
Here’s a few reasons I love this stuff:

- This is a similar texture to traditional hummus, but with fudgy, chocolate flavor
- Garbanzo beans (chickpeas) are the base ingredient here, a pantry staple.

This is a short list of possible delicious things you could serve with this fudgy dessert dip:
- Fresh fruits, any kind you’d like
- Thin cookies and little biscotti’s
- Endive leaf which is neutral tasting and crunchy
- Pretzels and plain or butter flavored biscuits
Step-by-Step Instructions
First step:
- Prep the chickpeas by rinsing them in a colander (strainer) with cool water
- Pat them dry them with a clean dish towel, then gently rub them together inside the towel until the outer skins slough off. Discard the skins.
- This little step takes a few minutes, but it’s so worth it…..It’s a much smoother overall texture when the chickpea skins are removed!
Make the Brownie Batter Hummus

- Step one: Boil the chickpeas in a little water for 6-8 minutes. Why? The warm chickpeas will result in a smoother final product.
- Step two: Put all the rest of the ingredients in a food processor (cooked chickpeas, tahini, maple syrup, cocoa powder, almond milk, vanilla extract and sea salt).
Storage Tips

The next step is to turn on the food processor and mix until smooth. This may take a couple of minutes of pulsing, tasting and adding a bit of almond milk or more maple syrup. Keep in mind that a little grainy-ness is normal and expected in this dessert dip!
Finish by putting the mixture in a serving bowl and topping with grated chocolate.
To store the hummus:
- Storing the chocolate hummus is easy! Put in an airtight container with a lid and keep it in the refrigerator for up to a week.
- Before serving, stir the hummus from the bottom completely to make sure the ingredients are combined.
Grating the Chocolate

- Start with a plain milk or dark chocolate bar that you’ve chilled in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes.
- Using a vegetable peeler, shave the longest part of the chocolate bar to make shavings.
- Use these shavings for garnish after you transferred the chocolate hummus to your serving bowl. I used about 2 tablespoons.
- Chill the hummus for an hour or more to develop the flavors.
- Keeps in the hummus in the fridge for up to a week in an airtight container. This is great make-ahead recipe!
Tips for Success

- If the hummus is too thick, just add a little more almond milk, a teaspoon at a time. Too much and your hummus will be thin.
- To make it sweeter, add a little more maple syrup, a tablespoon at time. The same rule applies – too much and the final product will be too thin, so go slow and remember this recipe isn’t intended to be overly sweet!
- You could rightfully call this “brownie batter hummus” as it tastes practically the same.
- This recipe makes about 2 1/2 cups of chocolaty, delicious hummus.
Serving Ideas

The sky is the limit with serving ideas for this easy dessert hummus recipe, and fresh fruit is perfect with it. Anything that can be scooped is a good choice!
Some other ideas besides what I’ve shown here are:
- apple slices
- graham crackers
- chocolate covered pretzels
- celery sticks (it totally works, trust me)
- jicama or cucumber are also neutral tasting and would be delish!

Of course! Try anything that suits your fancy. Choose cookies that are long and sturdy enough for scooping.
Yes! When you are making the hummus, take a spoonful and taste. Just add a little more maple syrup if you’d like, a tablespoon at a time. Too much and your hummus will be too thin to scoop, so watch this!

Brownie Batter Hummus
Ingredients
- 1 15 ounce can Chickpeas, drained
- ⅓ cup Tahini
- ⅓ cup Maple Syrup
- ½ cup Cocoa Powder
- 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
- ½ teaspoon Sea Salt
- 3 tablespoons Almond Milk
- 2 tablespoons Grated Chocolate, for garnish
- 2 cups Cookies or sweet biscuits, for serving
- 2 cups Fresh Fruits, for serving
Instructions
- Drain the chickpeas and rinse them in a colander (strainer) in cool water. Transfer to a clean dish towel, pat them dry and then gently rub the towel on them to remove the thin outside skin of the chickpeas, discard the skins and place the chickpeas in a small saucepan with ½ cup water. Cook the chickpeas on medium heat for about 6-8 minutes until the water is mostly evaporated, then transfer to a food processor.
- Add the tahini, maple syrup, cocoa powder, vanilla, salt and almond milk and process until the mixture is smooth. Taste and make it a little sweeter if you like by adding a tablespoon at a time of the maple syrup. If the sweetness is fine but the mixture is too thick, add a teaspoon at a time of the almond milk. You want the consistency of fudgey brownie batter, so be careful adding additional liquid, you don't want it too thin!
- Chill in the refrigerator for at least an hour or overnight in an airtight container.
- Serve on a platter with an assortment of cookies, biscuits and fruits.
