DEUCE
Deuce is 1-2 years old and an unclaimed stray from a local shelter. Deuce is on the smaller side at 22" and 45 lbs., deep red color, tail docked, dews off. Deuce is not quite sure how to play with all the dogs at my house but he does love to run fast and be in front of the pack races. He also likes the soccer ball and to carry it and chase it around. His #1 problem is lack of training for basic obedience like sit, stay, down, wait, and come. He is house trained but will try to chew things and he will counter surf when no one is watching. He needs someone who can provide lots of exercise and lots of consistent, positive training. He is a vocal whiner when crated but I would not leave him with run of the house while gone. He is a total lover but may be too much for an older dog that does not appreciate boundless energy. He is a happy boy and when he wags his tail he touches nose to tail and it is in hyper speed! More photos. (Deuce is in Salt Lake City UT)
Update Apr 2008: Deuce CANNOT be left in a yard unattended as he will figure a way out. He is not yet good off leash so will need to be on leash or a drag line until you have a chance to work on his recall. He will chase cats if allowed to so will require management in order to learn to live with cats.

BAILEY
Bailey is a 7-yo female vizsla, owner turned into an Idaho shelter because of a move... b. 4/25/2000 per the person who turned her in. She is good with cats, other dogs and all people as far as we can tell. She's not the most graceful vizsla you've ever met but what she lacks in looks she makes up for in personality. We were told she was a kennel dog all her life but she is comfortable in a house, loves the couch and respects fences. She wants to be a lap dog, likes car rides (although she doesn't always want to get out!) and is agreeable to almost anything. Bailey is a big girl at 50-lbs and there is nothing graceful about her but you won't find a more lovable dog and getting her out of your bed is probably akin to trying to move a beached whale! In foster care she is learning about couches, playing with toys and other dogs and needs work on crate training... although a crate is probably not needed for her in most cases. This is one very happy dog! More photos. (Bailey is in Boise ID)
Feb 2008: We've discovered Bailey has a bit of separation anxiety so will need a home who understands this issue and can help her work through it. She will break out of a crate if left unattended and did some serious damage to a door frame when we tried to leave her loose with another very calm dog. It's important to understand it's not a question of how long she is left alone but rather what she does in the first 15 minutes after you walk out the door. We were told she was kept as a kennel dog in her previous home so it could be she would do okay in a secure outdoor run for times when you have to leave her.
Mar 2008: Bailey seems to do fine in the car as long as she can see people... and any people will do. It doesn't have to be any one person and if the car is parked on a busy steet she is a happy girl.
Apr 2008: Bailey turns 8 on Friday April 25th and she would appreciate birthday wishes! We'll do our best to make it special for her but what she really wants is a home of her own.

DONNY
We will never understand why someone can have a dog for 10+ years and then not look for him when he gets lost. "Donny" is an approx 10-yr old purebred vizsla who was a shelter stray and his owner didn't come for him. He's not the most handsome vizsla in the world but he's a friendly old boy and the short tail dock is not his fault! He rides well in the car, walks nicely on a lead, has been fine with the other dogs in his foster home and is manageable with cats. He is interested in the cat but a simple "uh-uh" distracts him. His house manners are good despite the fact that he was probably an outside dog and requires an invitation to come inside. He does not get on the furniture... yet. If you liked Walter Matthau's character in the film Grumpy Old Men you will LOVE Donny!
Oct 12 2007: Donny underwent surgery this week to remove a tumor on his spleen and we are hopeful for a full recovery. We doubt the surgery will improve his attitude but he manages the chaos in his foster home like a gentleman. Donny is not great meeting other dogs but once he settles into his pack he does well.... including a newly added chi/doxie mix!
Oct 28 2007: Good news! Donny's tumor was not cancer and we hope he still has several good years ahead of him. He doesn't like pushy dogs who get in his face and will tell them so but he learns quickly that being a jerk makes the petting stop so he puts up with them. Donny is a counter cruiser and dumpster diver so we recommend crating when you are gone. If you have a calm home with room on the couch for one more dog please consider Donny. A home within a day's drive of Boise ID is preferred.
More photos. (Donny is in Boise ID)
(We would like to thank the VCA Welfare Foundation and the Vizsla Rescue Fund for their assistance with Donny's medical bills.)

THATCHER Thatcher was born August 25, 2003 and is the product of an intentional breeding between a chocolate lab mom and a Vizsla dad. Thatcher is a big strong boy at about 70 lbs, 26" tall, natural tail, dews on. He is house trained and crate trained. He needs more leash manners and a gentle walk or sensation harness is recommended (unless you want a sled dog). He is a very sweet boy who loves attention from men and woman equally. He loves a cool tile floor and curling up on the couch in your lap. He likes to play with tennis balls and loves water. He was originally adopted to a home in AZ but he is nervous around toddlers. He needs a home with no young kids and his exuberance and size might be daunting for even older children. Thatcher has been tested with cats -- NO cats. Thatcher does guard his bed or couch space from other dogs so may be best as an only dog. Thatcher is a good watchdog and barks to alert the family. Like all Vizsla, his glee at meeting new people is a bit overwhelming for visitors but he calms down after saying his friendly, if not frantic, hello. He knows the basic commands (sit, stay, off, go to bed), but sometimes his excitement keeps him from obeying. He will dig when left outside too long and may bark too much for many neighbors so needs a home who will crate him indoors. Are you looking for a dog that will be your best friend from the get-go? ROXIE in Fruitland ID
Roxie is a possible vizsla/lab mix and a great dog! We can't say enough about what a special girl whe is, and absolutely gorgeous too! She will play Frisbee or ball all day, if you will play with her. If you have ever wanted a dog that you could train to do agility or flyball, this is your dog - she can catch a ball or frisbee in midair with no problem. She is super-agile! She is extra smart and loves people. She gets along with other dogs, but would not do well with cats (she thinks they are chase toys!). She loves to jog or walk, too. But the nicest thing about her is that if she gets to play a little bit during the day, she will lie by your side and be a great companion every night. She is quite the cuddle bug! She is extremely well trained and can do some great tricks - she can count to 10, shake, roll over, and more! She also rides very nicely in the car. She is 11 months old and is in the Pen Pals Program out at the Snake River Correctional Institution where inmates have taught her to be a good dog. She is ready for adoption, so if you would like to make an appointment to see her or just want more information about the dogs or program, call Barb at 208-707-4663. The dogs from this program are crate-trained, house-trained and know basic obedience commands like "sit", "down", "come", "stay", and they know a trick or two. They have vet checks, are up-to-date on all vaccinations including kennel cough and rabies, and are spayed/neutered. Contact 2nd Chance Animal Shelter, 208.452.7387.

TOFFEE in Salt Lake City UT
Toffee is an approx 5-yo vizsla mix, adopted from a Utah shelter 4 years ago and now in need of a new home due to her primary care giver going off to college. She has been through basic obedience and knows some commands but "Come" is not one of them. Toffee is house trained, would love to be a lap dog, loves all people and is friendly with dogs of all sizes (currently shares her home with a poodle) and is manageable with cats. She is good with kids of all ages and is in good health. She will jump a fence and can pick a gate latch so needs to be in a secure run or inside when you are not at home. Toffee would make a great running buddy for an active hiking, biking, camping family or college student. We would not recommend Toffee for a "backyard dog" lifestyle as this dog needs regular exercise. For more information contact Jim at 801.225.4540 or cjjwstubbs@gmail.com. More photos.

BREWTUS in Las Vegas NV
Brewtus is a purebred vizsla, b. 5/23/2000 who is looking for a new home due to a marriage and extensive traveling. He is described as very loving, needy and loves attention. Good with grooming, likes car rides, likes water and is used to being an inside dog. He is okay with children but will knock little ones over, unknown with cats, has basic obedience and walks well on leash with a Gentle Leader. He gives kisses, takes treats nicely from hand. Like many vizslas he is pushy about being next to you, will use his snout to nudge your arm if you stop petting him and is happiest when someone is touching him. He is currently living outside but would dearly love to be an inside dog again. More info. Contact Kita at vizkid1@cox.net. More photos.

GUNNER & BUDDY in southern ID
Buddy adopted; GUNNER MISSING!
These two guys are Buddy (chocolate lab) and Gunner (yellow lab). Buddy and Gunner are being given up by their owner who says he has too many dogs. Buddy is three and a half years old and Gunner is one and a half years old. They are purebred and papered. They have been outdoor dogs their whole lives so will need some house training, but are both smart boys and would love to become a part of a family that will love and cherish them. They get along with other dogs, but we don't know about cats. They are currently still with their owners until after the holiday. We know that both dogs have been hunted, but not consistently. We don't know a lot about the dogs just yet, but are learning more. They are beautiful dogs with wonderful dispositions and will be neutered and up to date on vaccinations prior to being adopted into new homes. If you think you would be interested in meeting one or both, please contact Kelley at 208.869.4065 or k40moore@cableone.net.
***** HELP!!!: Gunner was lost 4 miles east of Rupert Idaho, between Baseline Road and River Island Drive near the Snake River. He was last seen the weekend of 12/23/07 and was not wearing a collar. It is believed he might have been picked up by someone and might be with a family in the area. There is a reward offered for his safe return. Please contact Kelley at 208.869.4065 if you have any info. *****

GUNNER in Nampa ID
Reeds Gunner Bob aka Gunner is an AKC registered German shorthaired pointer, b. 6/10/2001 out of Sly's Tell and Girl Ginger. He is in need of a home due to his owner going off to college. He is approximately 60-lbs, white with liver patches, current on vaccines and has had regular veterinary care. We are told he is not good with cats but can be managed with cats depending on the circumstances. Does not bark, loves other dogs and people of all ages but might be too rambunctious for young children. He is not a barker, loves water, travels well in the car and is somewhat leash trained. Good with livestock and likes to hunt but needs training as he forgets to come back. He spent most of his life in a yard with another dog but PeeDee was rehomed recently and now Gunner is facing the winter alone. While Gunner has hunting potential he must be an indoor family member first and a hunter second. For more info contact Penny at pfenton3@aol.com, 208.343.6620 h or 208.859.5698 c.
